Cooking Gas and Manure from Cattle Wealth — Cow-Dung Gas Scheme
The Gulzarilal Nanda Foundation showed options for cooking gas from cattle wealth and NADEP compost cow-dung manure that increases soil fertility.
Efforts will be made to encourage the promotion of an orchard scheme of mango, drumstick, neem and jamun that improves soil fertility and is environment-friendly.
Emphasis on making various products from cow dung — This initiative of the Gulzarilal Nanda Foundation is a commendable step toward the rural economy and environmental protection. The main points of this scheme of self-reliance through cattle wealth and organic farming are as follows:
Cow-dung gas (Biogas): Using cow-dung gas as an alternative to cooking gas not only reduces fuel costs but also protects health by providing clean, smokeless fuel.
NADEP Compost: This method of making more and higher-quality manure from less cow dung naturally increases soil fertility. It is a strong means of ending dependence on chemical fertilisers.
The Foundation has emphasised planting specific trees to improve soil health and the environment:
Drumstick (Sahjan): This is a ‘superfood’ that provides nutrition and also becomes a source of income.
Neem and Jamun: While neem serves as a natural pesticide and medicine, jamun is important for biodiversity and fruit production.
Mango orchards: They ensure long-term economic benefits for farmers.
Going beyond manure alone, rural employment can be created by making various products from cow dung:
Gokashth (Lumber from Cow Dung): As an alternative to wood for cremation or havan.
Dhoopbatti and Agarbatti: Free of chemicals and purifying to the atmosphere.
Diyas and idols: As eco-friendly alternatives during festivals.
Organic pesticides: Reducing the cost of farming through products such as Jeevamrit and Panchagavya.
Conclusion: This model of the Gulzarilal Nanda Foundation is based on the principle of “Waste to Wealth” (Kachre se Kanchan). It not only solves the problem of stray cattle, but also helps in doubling farmers’ income and saving the land from turning barren.
